With all the noise around MySQL, we have almost forgotten what Oracle has acquired by buying Sun. Of course, the database is important but it is not the most important between Oracle's acquisitions in this transaction. Then, what obtains Oracle? Small reminder.
Listing what Oracle gets- This article aims at enlightening systems which now belongs to Oracle, after the purchase of Sun(*). First, with Sun, Oracle gets an important hardware (with servers, desktop, storage, systems). The whole is managed by Solaris. Then, let's mention the Java System Web Proxy Server. And of course, Oracle gets MySQL but it also holds the Java programming language by now. Finally, we could evoke StarOffice, the proprietary version of OpenOffice. Towards a monopolistic situation?- This type of acquisition may be very interesting for Oracle. For example, by now, when you type Sun OpenStar in your browser, you are redirected to Oracle website. Then, they propose you to buy StarOffice for 34$95, or only 1/10 of Microsoft offer for the same category of products. What is striking in this acquisition is the amount of technologies and systems which are transmitted to Oracle. The American corporation seems to aim at offering a very complete range of products and services in terms of hardwares and softwares. They have got what they wanted : be more competitive.
(*) Our list does not claim to be exhaustive. It just intends to list Oracle's main acquisitions.
